How do I edit my store’s shipping rates?

To edit your shipping rates, go to your Store Admin Panel and click to Settings > Shipping Rates. Those of you who have run an online store before should have no problem editing your shipping info, but if this is your first shop, we thought we’d help you out with a walk-through. First, an overview…

Shipping Classes vs. Shipping Groups

Once you set up your initial Groups and Classes, adding Shipping Rates to new products will be a cinch!

  • Shipping classes are based on location and speed — where the order is going and, if applicable, how fast.
  • Shipping groups are based on product types — what’s being shipped.

How to Edit Your Shipping Rates: A Walk-Through

First, you’ll need to specify WHERE you’ll be shipping — Shipping Classes. By default, we’ve included two Shipping Classes for you: Standard and Everywhere Else (with Standard set to the U.S.).

If you live in the U.S. and plan to ship all your items via typical USPS rates, both foreign and domestic, these two Classes should be perfect for you.

If you don’t live in the U.S., you’ll want to start by editing your Standard Shipping Class. Next to the word Standard, click Edit. You can change the name of the Class Name here if you’d like; e.g., “Standard UK.” (For now, skip the Set Group Shipping Costs for this Class box.) In the Countries list, deselect United States and instead select your country (as well as any other countries that will get the same rate as your own). Save Changes.

If you’ll be offering an expedited shipping option — the SPEED of the delivery — you can also add that here. Say you’re in the U.S. and want to offer both Standard U.S. and Overnight U.S. shipping. First you’ll Edit the Standard Class (described above). Then click the Add Shipping Class button in the upper left of the page, name it in a way that clearly denotes your expedited shipping method, select which country this applies to, and Save Changes.

Tip: When your shoppers are checking out, they’ll see these Shipping Class names in a drop-down menu that lets them select their preferred shipping rate. Typos not preferred! :)

Next, we’ll specify what TYPES of products you’ll be shipping — Shipping Groups. Click the View by Shipping Groups button. By default, we’ve included one Shipping Group: T-shirts.

Next to the word T-shirts, click Edit. Change this Group name to the first type of product you’ll be selling. (If it’s T-shirts, you’re all set!)

Now, under Set Class Shipping Costs for this Group, you can set your specific shipping rates. When shipping to the first Shipping Class (location/speed) you created, how much does it cost to send this type of item? Enter that number in the First Item blank. (If you haven’t shipped any of your items yet, you can always enter and estimate and then edit it later.)

The Additional Items blank is for when someone orders multiples of the same item. Almost anytime you’re shipping several items in the same package, it will cost less to ship than if you shipped the same package twice, so we make it easy to account for multiples from the get-go.

Enter your First Item and Additional Items shipping rates for each Shipping Class (location/speed), and Save Changes.

To add more product types, click the Add Shipping Group button in the upper left. You can add as many as you like, based on the number of product types you sell.

Tip: If you sell several types of products that all ship in the same type of package, feel free to combine those into whatever Groups suit you best. For example, if Necklaces, Bracelets and Rings all ship in the same box type, your Group can be called Necklaces + Bracelets + Rings. Whatever’s easiest for you — your shoppers never see your Shipping Group names.
