Hard edged rock, dipped in the melting pot of Garage and Blues, riffs and screams, with an unforgiving cut to the bone social commentary. Ghost of Progress have made a relentless album of 10 tracks that after listening you need to come up for a breath, they really are a cruel bunch of bastards, if you listen to the lyrics which are tinged with sexual violence and religious pornographic shadows. Don't believe me? try these
"I'd rather be a failure than be a whore" - Bitch in Heat
"Get on your knees and pray its like giving head" - Coffin Dodger
And theres a lot more, worse than that. But don't think these wicked statements are designed to exclude, in fact, the anthemic nature of the songs mean you find your self singing out along with Palgrave and Christie. I've seen these boys live and I can tell you a room full of angry pissed young Scotsmen punching the air and singing "Sits there at home, collects benefits, spends her weekend ...spit...shining..dicks" en masse and as one, is a powerful thing indeed, in fact its downright frightening.
Lets make no bones about it, if you like subtleties in your music then your gonna have to look elsewhere, these boys have come in through the window and are screaming in your face. Its drunk and loud, poetic and laser accurate. Thats not to say there aren't subtlies here, there are but you may not find them until you get over the initial shock. Its obsessed with sex and uses sexual conceptions to severely label the point, but this is were the truth of Ghosts of Progress lie, young men living in a small town in Scotland, what the hell else are they going to write about?...going down Route 66?....their favourite Californian surf break? no, sex, booze, death, religion, hypocrisy, and they scream it at you, unforgivable and unasking of forgivness, stinking of Whisky and last nights coitus. The title of the album alone is the best album name I've ever heard and reason enough to own it. EXCHANGE YOUR PROBLEMS FOR DOPE AND WHISKY, indeed.
