#5 Puka shell, carved buffalo bone & horn. This pendant was hand carved from buffalo bone and horn. Bone was one of the very first materials to be made into jewelry. Around the world, primitive people carved the bones of the animals they hunted with sharp rocks. Native Americans were experts at carving jewelry out of bone, and the practice still continues today. Puka shell jewelry originated in Hawaii, where the ocean created natural puka shell beads by tumbling sea snail shells around until they broke up into disks with small holes in the center-ready to be picked up and strung onto necklaces by natives. Photo is a copy of the item. Close to actual size. This necklace is 20" inches long. If you are unsure if it will fit you, then measure one of your own necklaces to compare the size and tell me approximately how many more inches you would like me to add or take away, free of charge.
