Around 25 yrs. ago a friend of mine lived in a tumble-down Victorian house on our CA coast. There were literally hundreds of these bottles on the property. I was told that a former congressman had owned the house and held political rallies there. Ale was stored in these earthenware bottles before modern glass bottles were used, sealed with a small cork. This ale bottle is pale grey-blue in color, 81/2" tall, and 3" wide at its base. It's slightly distressed due to age, but otherwise in very good condition. No chips, cracks or scratches.
