Jewelry can often make a statement, but it very rarely makes a difference. The Vibrant Bead Company is set to change your perception of what is precious by introducing a line of spectacular beaded jewelry that is as fashion forward as it is environmentally and socially conscious. Hand rolled from recyclable materials, these beads are individually crafted by indigenous women living throughout the Central African region. The artistry and skill taken to create each bead makes every strand a masterpiece as well as a miracle of ingenuity.
Discarded magazines are the medium used by artisans to make the vivid necklaces (available in various lengths, bead sizes and colors). Strands take approximately nine hours to create; an exercise in patience for each labor intensive bead to be formed. The very nature of this process insures that no two beads, or necklaces, will ever be the same, thus making each finished creation a one-of-a-kind work of art.
Colorful and pleasing to the eye, these beads portray the vibrancy of life, in stark contrast to the squalid, impoverished and often war-ravaged living conditions of the women who make them. The Vibrant Bead Company was founded by Shanna Lee and Heath Bell in 2009 to share the work of these talented craftswomen, as well as help support their communities. In addition to a fair price undertaking, ten percent of company proceeds from the sale of Vibrant Beads will be distributed between registered not-for-profit organizations for community development programs within Africa.
“For countries where recycling as we know it is an afterthought, if considered at all,’’ says The Vibrant Bead Company co-founder Shanna Lee. “A progressive idea has emerged: don’t discard what you can redirect! In short, if you can’t recycle – RE USE!”
Unlike many African handcrafts, the bulk of materials used to create these beads come from recyclable materials. This sustainable and environmentally-friendly jewelry line offers a welcome alternative for those seeking responsible fashion choices.
“Given the amount of land strictly taken up by paper and paper by-product disposal (not to mention issues with re-milling), products like these are a responsible solution,” says company co-founder Heath Bell. “Not only does it decrease the associated environmental impact with waste of this type, it makes people aware that there are alternative and functional ways of dealing with it; not the least of which is to transform it into a completely NEW product. From our point of view, this is an ingenious preliminary step to tackling many of the problematic components that comprise a large part of day to day waste.”
