Selling Art Prints--How are sales?

Hilary posted April 07, 2011 15:43 ago

How is everyone doing with art prints? I recently purchased a Epson printer and just listed some art prints. Do you sell prints? If so, how are sales?

Do you have any off-the-wall pointers or suggestions for increasing sales?

If you get a chance pop over and see my newest postings and tell me what you think!

Hey! I just joined, so no sales so far. Sorry I can't help with that. I did check out your shop though, and I really like your work! Following you now. Keep on keepin' on!

Hey Hilary, I would recommend showcasing some of your prints in a cool frame, its a great way to dress them up and really gives people a good sense of how awesome they can look.

Digging your style, keep it up!

I also just joined so I can't help with your question, but I'm curious to know how you like your epson printer?

I've been thinking of buying one myself.

acorbello, I do like it. The ink is expensive but it's archival. A professional artist I follow, uses this printer. A lot of sellers on Etsy use it as well. Some people think it's not a great printer but I think you get that with everything. Let me know if you have any more questions, good luck with your decision!

One last question Hilary - How long does the ink last? Do you find that it runs out all the time or can you get quite a few prints out of it first?

Thanks for the info - I appreciate it!

Acorbello, I bought mine early summer, well according to the initial post 5 months ago. I'm still using the ink I got then. I've printed at least one copy of 26 prints and some duplicates so I'm not sure of the exact number but so far I've been happy with the ink usage.

I've gotten some action on prints. Most of my store are limited edition prints, and I find that people definitely don't like to scroll down the page! Whatever is at the top gets the most views, for sure. My latest site tweak is to add categories 'under $100', 'under $50', 'under $25' ... you get it.

I've been making prints and having them made for many years and I pretty much use Epson printers exclusively. Obviously there are a huge range of printers that they have, but any $100 printer of any brand is going to be able to handle small quantities of prints being made. To save money (and a lot of time), I now have my prints done (still on an Epson).

Can get huge uncut sheets of prints on a variety of different papers and canvases and can usually find deals going on around town that really make it worth my while. Such as at Dick Blick art supply.

Does anyone know if there are ever any focused promotions around here on, say, just prints? Or just t-shirts? Or just 4th of July? or whatever else?

Most of my store are limited edition of giclée prints. I have my own printer, a professional one, not a epson printer or kind of. I think for this kind of work you need a really good quality.

I've been thinking about doing printings. Most likely would not be printing myself. Instead be taking them to a professional printer & going from there.

Been having tons of trouble getting good enough pictures of my larger paintings though, I would never be able to print a bad quality photo. Luckily most of my paintings are small.

  • ATOMIC_BOY said February 27, 2012 15:37 ago

Digital scanning and photography can be a problem, especially for large originals. All of my large paintings are on stretched canvas, so drum scans aren't going to be a possibility, and I don't have the time to properly light and shoot them in a studio myself, so I take them to a place that specializes in photographing and reproducing artwork.

Just check for local giclee printers in your area, because many of them shoot the originals themselves. The only problem I've run into is that some tend to want to keep the files themselves so they can only be printed at their business. But obviously not all have that policy.

As for the quality of prints -- Epson is pretty much the standard at any giclee house. They are museum quality and with the correct archival inks last well over 100 years. Printer technology is definitely at the level to be able to get that same quality in your home, using the same archival inks, with an entry level Epson for any short run and small (less than 11x14) size. The quality is not the printer but in the inks used.
