haha you're definitely right. Everyone and their cat has a clothing line now a days. I think one of the most important things is to have great looking designs that you think people will want to wear. Just because you like it doesnt mean other people will (plus you're gonna be a little biased about your own stuff since you designed it haha). do some contests for people to win some free stuff. everyone likes free things and it will help get your name out there. even if they didnt pay for the shirt, if they actively wear it, its basically paying for advertising.

Obviously the fashion industry is all about trends. so it cant be hard to sell something that istn 'in' right now. maybe make a few designs that kinda follow the trend while still putting your own twist/flavor to it and then have other shirts that are completely your own ideas.

At the end of the day, im sure a good part of making it is just knowing the right people to help spread the word and get you out there to be seen. There could be a ton of people who would buy and wear your stuff but you cant sell them what they dont know exists.

thats just some of my opinion.

    here's my store.

There are many designers with their own labels and many companies as well. But you just have to give it your best and work hard at it or you will never succeed. Study the trends, post your artwork out there and get feedback before it prints. Get suggestions and ideas.

I am up for helping anyone. I am not the best artist or by far the best shop owner. I am beginning mine this year but I am for suggestions and ideas.

    1. Start with your design ideas..

    2. Feedback get peoples comments ask other designers for their opinions.

    3. Get a plan ready . What you will need , your budget, materila costs.etc.

    4. Be Creative, with your designs, your shipping, etc..

    5. You must be dedicated. Dont just half a** Give it your best .

    Amazing advice guys

I 100% agree advertising is key.
    Great ways to promote
    1. Create a look book
2.Create a flyer that shows a model in your clothes
    3. Throw a fashion show or take part in one. ( I have get tons of good feedback through shows.
-Also I get a lot of models who want to buy clothing

Getting others opinion So right on veneratecloth and msabas
-This year I'm printing out ideas then getting some peoples opinions
    - I am also making samples.
-Instead of making 50 shirts I am making a sample and then making as I get orders.

Staying on trend is very key
I think people who will buy local designers are fashion forward. The want unique items no one has. So its good to check out high fashion magazines

yeah what tinx said collabs are always a good idea. help each other get names out

  • AliasPink April 05, 2012 21:27

I think collabs are great for some lines.
I guess it would be good to collab with someone who has a similar style of art.

guest artist are another good idea.
Helps other people get their name out there and yours.

any one here done a collab I love to hear how it worked out for them?

  • Jamesanomic April 05, 2012 22:30

yeah i have, with vice versa apparel, we both attend the Relay For Life in our town, it's a walk to raise money for cancer research. we made a design with that in mind, we go to the events and sell them and of course donate the profit to the event. we always sell out. helps get our name out there to as our logos are in the design.

oh yeah and thats another idea do events like that, or make a certain t-shirt a "give back" shirt, donate the profits of it to a organization or not for profit company etc. just some ideas

  • AliasPink April 06, 2012 21:22

I like that concept. Thanks for the tip Jamesanomic.
I have had a few opportunities to do something for breast cancer but I was too busy to design anything.

Since you have had great success I will have borrow your formula if you don't mind.

just trying to keep this thread alive it is such a good discussion page

  • Quakerninja April 26, 2012 00:53

Came across this neat site, for selling downloadable products, Art files, Music ect.
    https://gumroad.com
    /introduction

Too keep this a discussion and not an ad.
Clients spend a bunch of money to print shirts they don't want to see other people doing that same thing. I get that.

But digital art isn't original meaning only 1 available, and copyright last life of the artist plus 70 years so from the perspective of an artist selling something once or for a limited run is stupid.

Where's the line on using something like Gumroad? Tee factory sells pre made designs, and I remember there was a mob when one of them showed up on a contest site.
People have a lot of opinions about wether or not to use vector packs or clip art and so forth. I like the idea of being a seller, but I also need clients to be happy. Is there any way this could work?

I just opened an accessory store yesterday to sell my designs made from recycled materials (www.nativetrashion.com), and as of now I don't have any tshirts but I want to make some in the near future!

Does anyone have any advice on where to get them printed? Also does anyone have knowledge on Eco-friendly tshirt printing or recycled tshirts? I have done tons of research but it would be great to hear some recommendations if there is like an awesome place to go for this

Also the advice that has already been posted is really helpful in my planning process! So thanks :)

  • LittleCreeps August 24, 2012 20:38

I agree with you AliasPink, the market is over saturated with clothing lines whether they're indie brands or major corporation. It's great for the consumers but tough for us start ups or indie brands to break out and establish a solid fan base.
I definitely recommend reading books Threads Not Dead and blogs like www.iamthetrend.com they give excellent insight and valuable tips on improving upon your line. I don't have any golden ticket advice for success but I believe it starts with uniqueness, having a defined niche, professional grade content (an aspect I need to improve on), quality over quantity and dedication. Even "over night successes" take months or years to establish a loyal following and be sustainable.

    Just my 2 cents,
    Jesse Martin
