What would make a good top coat for a custom made cell phone case?

KittiesGoRuff posted April 25, 2012 15:43

My friend has given me a great idea of making my own cell case for my Android phone, by getting a plain case, adding stickers, Rhine stones, or whatever I want on it, and then adding a top coat of some sort.

My friend said clear nail polish, but I don't think that is going to work long time.

Is there a stronger top coat/sealant that I can use that will be long lasting and scratch resistant? What would be the best material for the plain case be for this?

If I can make a good prototype for myself I might actually make them for my shop. Also, thanks in advance!

I would use Mod Podge, which you can get in any craft store and probably a lot of other big stores like that lol. I wouldn't recommend clear nail polish, it'd be hard to apply it smoothly and it might not be all that durable or scratch resistant.

A friend suggested Mod Podge but when I contacted them they said it wouldn't work.
"We do not recommend any of our products for this application. Mod Podge is for decorative use only (just for looks). Also Mod Podge is a water based product and will stay sticky on your surface."
But I want to make something with Mod Podge now though! Even if its not for my phone.

I would use mod podge as a base, and then cover it in a clear varnish to harden it and make sure it's water proof! I make phone cases covered in recyled magazines, and that holds up for me very well. There are clear spray varnishes that make it really fast and easy!

    Hope that helps :)

That's a good idea! Can you recommend any brands of clear spray varnish?
