PayPal Mobile Card & Check Reader

Cobaltraven posted May 24, 2012 15:39

This is for storeowners who also take their stuff to events and outside marketplaces. I have been using Squareup.com for a few years now as I take some of my handmade items, tarot readings and books (now out of print, long story) to conventions, Pagan events and as I don't have a physical store, I will meet clients for readings.
Square has been great at 2.75% per swipe and 3.5% + .15 cents for manually entered transactions with no monthly fees. Now the PayPal (https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/credit-card-reader) option seems to only charge 2.7% AND you can scan checks as well. I'm thinking it might be a better option when it launches since I already have a business debit card and would not have to wait a few days to have it transferred to my bank account...you can use the funds within minutes.

So does anyone else take their wares on the go or use a mobile credit card reader? Are there better options out there?

I also use Square, and am very interested to see what replies you get! :)

I love Square - after hearing horror stories of Paypal's regular functions I'm not eager to use a mobile credit card application with them. O.o I hope it works out well for anyone that uses them though!

Are you wanting to know about Square, or PayPal?

@karaschains With both companies the card reader will be sent to you for free, there is no monthly fee either. The only thing you will pay is the percentages that they take out with each transaction. I have been very happy with Square (https://squareup.com/) but am wondering if PayPal would cheaper.

@Kodeekins I love Square too. What horror stories? HHMM, maybe I won't be an early adopter with PayPal then :/ Personally, I've never had a problem with them, but I'll go do so research. No worries about the double post, we all do it from time to time :)

@Feathernoodles I'm in the same boat. I'm curious to see if it's worth the switch. I def would like to see Square build the Android version of their register....kinda bummed that they seem so Apple friendly, but not everyone has an Ipad. I'd also like to see Square adopt the check scanning as well, that would be awesome!

Check scanning would be sweet! I haven't had any problems, yet, but I always get a little nervous when someone hands me a check!

As of right now I don't take checks....I have no way to verify the funds so it's cash & cards only. Except for certain people that I am will to barter with....that can be fun, especially at Pagan events.
