When someone makes an order from my store, they are directed to the pay-pal site. Do they have to sign up for a pay-pal account in order to make a purchase? Because it seems to me that it could deter people away from actually making the purchase.

At this point in time, yes they do. We're using this brand new PayPal system that only came out the day we launched the site. BUT the good news is that they've promised me that they will institute paying without a PayPal account in the near future. It's a request they've gotten quite a bit and they are going to offer it as an option.

So people need a Storenvy Account and a Paypal Account to buy something? I only question this because this might seem like too much work for some customers. And I don't know how quick to respond Paypal is as they've never enabled discount codes despite the requests for it.

I had one customer tell me it was huge ordeal for him to buy b/c he didn't have a paypal acct. He only stuck with it because he personally knew me. Also we have had people send us checks rather than pay online because they didn't want the hassle. So I agree it would be much better not to have a paypal acct to purchase.

when you say near future? do you know about when that will be? like a month, 6 months, a year?

Setting up a Storenvy account take literally 10 seconds (username, password, email, submit!) and we haven't seen sales go down since we started requiring it so I don't think it's really slowing anybody down. That said, we've talked about taking it out and we probably will. The big "up side" of requiring registration is that it will allow people to easily track their orders in the new shopper order tracking area we're working on. We'll come up with something though.

As far as PayPal, they are hesitant to ever give a definite timeline on anything. Their lawyers won't let them. Ha! But I talk to them pretty much every week and push this topic at pretty much every opportunity. I'm actually supposed to get on the phone with them this week or next to talk about ways we can optimize the Storenvy/PayPal checkout process to make it as smooth and fast as possible. Just know that we do everything we can to make sure you guys are making the most sales possible. Always.

Actually the Storenvy account makes sense in regards to order tracking and being able to participate in the social stuff. I'm just saying sometimes people are either lazy or will wonder why they need to sign up and send their info to two different sources to be able to buy something. But mostly I'm pointing fingers at Paypal on this one since they already have the no account necessary thing implemented on their current payment system.
