Selling Both Taxable and Non-Taxable Items

michelletoner posted June 13, 2012 20:47

My store has about 50% of it's items which are taxable in my state (jewelry) and about 50% of the items which are not taxable (aprons). People will often buy an apron together with a piece of jewelry as they compliment each other. I know where I can specify store tax rates both in PayPal & StoreEnvy. The problem seems to be, I can't seem to tell StoreEnvy not to use the tax rates for a shop section or a particular item.
I do not want to build the tax into the item price as it will just make my life more complicated, especially because I sell at other venues both online & offline. And I do handmade, so I can't really afford to give a discount even if it's 6.25%. As it is, most of my items are below what I should charge wholesale.
Is there any way to do this or work around it? I imagine this has to be a somewhat common problem.
Thanks in advance!

Why are aprons non-taxable? In almost all states you have to pay taxes on any money you make selling to other residents of the same state.

I don't know about most, I just know about mine. And Massachusetts can't make anything simple. All clothing, aprons and costumes under a certain amount per piece is non-taxable. There's a giant list of other exceptions in our state, too.
I'm still hoping I can make StoreEnvy work but any suggestions would be helpful.
